STUDIES ON BACILLUS TYPHOSUS TOXIC SUBSTANCES III . T~E EFFECT OF SEN UPON THE INJ~rRy PRODVCING FACTORS OF THE PHENOMENON OF LOCAL SKIN REACTIVITY BY GREGORY SHWARTZMAN, M.D

چکیده
In previous communications (1-8) there was described a phenomenon of local skin reactivity to culture filtrates of bacillus typhosus and other microorgamsms. The reactivity was induced by the injection of a filtrate into the skin of a rabbit. If 24 hours later an intravenous injection of the same filtrate was given to the rabbit, there appeared an extremely severe hemorrhagic necrosis at the site of the previous injection. The factors determining the local skin reactivity were termed "skin preparatory factors" and those responsible for the local injury following the intravenous injection were called "reacting factors." Features characteristic of this phenomenon as well as certain properties of the skin preparatory factors were described. One of these properties was the specific neutralizability by immune sera of the skin preparatory factors (2, 3). The object of the work reported in this paper was to determine the effect of sera upon the Bacillus typhosus reacting factors.

Phenomenon of Local Skin Reactivity to Bacillus Tuberculosis
New toxic substances in certain tuberculin, O.T., and B. typhosus culture filtrates are described. These substances are capable of eliciting the hemorrhagic necrosis characteristic of the phenomenon of local skin reactivity provided heterologous bacterial filtrates of high potency are used either for the intradermal or the intravenous injection. The toxic substances apparently have no relations...
متن کاملGrading of Local Skin Reactivity to Bacterial Filtrates
In this paper there are described methods for grading the local skin reactivity induced by bacterial filtrates. The grading is accomplished by titration of the skin-preparatory factors; and by studies on the duration of ensuing reactivity. It was found that the duration of reactivity depends upon the mode of preparation of filtrates and the microorganisms employed. Thus, it lasts for 96 hours w...
متن کاملConcerning the Specificity and Nature of the Phenomenon of Local Skin Reactivity to Various Bacterial Filtrates
The specifcity and the nature of the phenomenon of local skin reactivity to various microorganisms have been studied. It has been shown that the skin preparatory and reacting factors of various biologically and serologically unrelated microorganisms are able to substitute for each other, provided they have the power of eliciting the phenomenon for themselves. Additional evidence has been brough...
متن کاملStudies on Bacillus Typhosus Toxic Substances
A phenomenon of local skin reactivity to B. typhosus culture filtrates is described in this report. The reactivity was induced by skin injections of the filtrate followed 24 hours later by an intravenous injection of the same filtrate. The local response consisted of severe hemorrhagic necrosis and was fully developed 4 to 5 hours after the second injection. About 78 to 79 per cent of the rabbi...
متن کاملFurther Studies on the Nature of the Phenomenon of Local Skin Reactivity to Bacterial Filtrates: Toxic Factors Derived from the Blood Serum
Observations reported here seem to demonstrate the liberation or formation of a toxic principle in blood serum through a colloidal disturbance in the latter. The principle is able to elicit severe injury in tissues made vulnerable by a bacterial filtrate.
